Location: Burke County, Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 316.3, Newland, NC- between Boone and Asheville.
Linville Falls, nestled along the Blue Ridge Parkway, is an iconic gem of North Carolina’s landscape. This multi-tiered cascade drops 90 feet and offers mesmerizing views of the gorge, with five overlooks scattered about the trails. You can get to Linville Falls via a moderate 1.6-mile trail, the Erwin’s View Trail. There is also an additional trail, Linville Gorge Trail, here as well. Keep in mind, though, that the latter trail is definitely a bit more strenuous than the first. Both trails can be accessed from the visitors center, where you will also find restrooms and a picnic area.

Tip: Do not follow GPS. Google will take you to the wrong location, which is nowhere near the parking lot for the trail. Type 39000 Blue Ridge Parkway Marion, NC into GPS and use that for the correct directions.

Location: Transylvania County, Pisgah National Forest, Gorges State Park, near Lake Toxaway, Highlands, Cashiers, and Brevard, NC

Tip: This one is very easily accessible so it can get crowded. Get there early if you prefer to avoid that.

Upper Whitewater Falls is the highest waterfall in the eastern United States and is a majestic sight to behold. Note: Please stay on the trails. Don’t venture off. Unfortunately some people have ventured off the trails and died or were badly hurt. Always follow posted signs.

Tip: You can see Triple Falls, High Falls (below), and Hooker Falls (below) on the same day if you’re up for it. Also, Bridal Veil Falls and Grassy Creek Falls are smaller waterfalls that are located in DuPont State Forest. Be sure to check those out while you’re there.

Note: Courthouse Falls trail can be tricky to find. There is an upper trailhead and a lower trailhead. I had cell service when I visited and was able to locate the upper trailhead fairly easily with GPS, but there are a lot of reports of people getting turned around trying to find Courthouse Falls.
