NC Scenic Drives and Fall Leaf Peeping

Best Routes for Fall Foliage

One of the best ways to take in the fall foliage is by embarking on a scenic drive. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers stunning views of the changing leaves and picturesque landscapes. Stretching from the Great Smoky Mountains to Shenandoah National Park, this drive is a must-see in the fall. Enjoying a scenic drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains, stopping along the way to take pictures and see the gorgeous views, is one of my families favorite NC fall activities!

Another top route is through the Great Smoky Mountains, where you can enjoy a variety of elevations and ecosystems, each displaying a unique palette of autumn colors.

Peak Viewing Times

Timing is crucial for the best leaf-peeping experience. In North Carolina, peak foliage generally occurs:

  • Early October for higher elevations (e.g., the Blue Ridge Parkway)
  • Mid to late October for lower elevations (e.g., Asheville and the Piedmont region)
